The Economic and Commercial Office of the Embassy of Spain in Accra recently hosted the eighth edition of Taste Spain Accra, a high-profile gastronomic and trade exhibition designed to strengthen commercial ties between Ghana and Spain. The event, held under the patronage of ICEX Spain’s Trade and Investment Agency, served as a pivotal platform for Spanish food and beverage producers to engage with Ghanaian importers, distributors, and industry professionals.
A Strategic Expansion of Trade and Culinary Exchange
Building on the success of the 2022 edition, this year’s exhibition focused on expanding market access for Spanish agri-food products while fostering long-term business collaborations. The event featured an exclusive display of premium Spanish wines, artisanal juices, and gourmet delicacies, showcasing the diverse and world-renowned gastronomic heritage of Spain.
Eight leading Spanish companies participated, presenting their latest innovations and traditional specialties to a select audience of Ghanaian business stakeholders. Additionally, established Spanish brands already present in Ghana’s market reinforced their visibility, demonstrating the growing demand for Spanish products in the West African nation.
A Multifaceted Platform for Business Growth
Beyond the commercial exhibition, Taste Spain Accra 2026 incorporated interactive tastings and networking sessions, designed to enhance attendee engagement and facilitate direct business connections. The event brought together:
– Ghanaian importers and distributors seeking high-quality international products
– Retailers, hotels, and restaurants looking to diversify their supply chains
– Catering companies and food service operators exploring premium Spanish offerings
– Specialised industry professionals interested in culinary trends and trade partnerships
This holistic approach ensured that participants could sample products firsthand, negotiate deals, and build lasting professional relationships with Spanish producers.
Parallel Initiatives in Africa: A Regional Strategy
The exhibition was part of a broader African expansion strategy for Spanish businesses, with simultaneous editions held in Nairobi (Kenya) and Abidjan (Ivory Coast). This multi-country approach underscores Spain’s strategic focus on emerging African markets, where demand for European food and beverage products continues to rise.
Record Trade Figures and Sectoral Growth
The event coincided with robust trade statistics, highlighting the rapidly expanding commercial relationship between Ghana and Spain. According to Mr. Yann Emonet Ripoll, Head of the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in Accra, Spanish exports to Ghana reached €273 million in 2025, marking a 26% increase from the previous year.
A notable highlight was the agri-food sector, which has emerged as one of the fastest-growing export categories. Spanish agri-food exports to Ghana more than doubled, rising from €23.5 million in 2024 to €50.2 million in 2025—accounting for nearly 20% of total Spanish exports to the country last year.
The Role of Gastronomy in Economic Diplomacy
Mr. Ripoll emphasized that Spanish gastronomy has become a global brand, with Ghanaian consumers increasingly recognizing the quality and uniqueness of Spanish products. He noted:
“Over the years, Taste Spain Accra has evolved into a key platform for connecting Spanish producers with Ghanaian professionals, reinforcing our commercial ties. While Spanish wine remains a flagship product, this year’s exhibition expanded to include a broader range of food and beverage offerings, reflecting Spain’s diverse culinary excellence.”
The event also underscored the Embassy’s commitment to facilitating quality business matchmaking, ensuring that Spanish companies gain sustainable access to Ghana’s dynamic market.
A Blueprint for Future Collaborations
As Ghana continues to diversify its import portfolio, Spanish agri-food products—known for their innovation, quality, and cultural appeal—are well-positioned to capture a larger share of the market. Taste Spain Accra remains a cornerstone initiative in this effort, bridging cultural exchange with economic opportunity while positioning Spain as a trusted partner in Ghana’s food and beverage sector.
With trade volumes surging and new business alliances forming, the event reaffirmed that Spain and Ghana’s commercial relationship is not just growing—it is thriving, driven by shared ambition, culinary passion, and strategic foresight.
