In the wake of prolonged and intense rainfall across multiple regions of Ghana, the Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with key emergency response agencies, has issued a critical public safety advisory urging citizens to exercise heightened vigilance and adhere strictly to precautionary measures. The flooding, which has already caused disruptions in several areas, poses immediate and escalating risks to life, property, and infrastructure.

Immediate Precautions for All Citizens

The Ministry has directed the general public to avoid unnecessary movement and stay in their current locations until weather conditions stabilize. Those who are safely at home are strongly advised to remain indoors, while individuals in workplaces, schools, or other secure locations must stay put until authorities confirm it is safe to travel. The advisory emphasizes that any movement during this period could exacerbate the situation, particularly as floodwaters may continue to rise unpredictably.

Dangerous Conditions for Motorists and Pedestrians

A firm warning has been issued to all drivers and pedestrians against attempting to traverse flooded roads, bridges, or waterlogged areas. Floodwaters can increase rapidly, creating life-threatening conditions with risks including sudden currents, submerged obstacles, and structural failures. The Ministry underscores that even shallow floodwaters can be deadly, and no area should be assumed safe without prior verification from emergency services.

Deployment of Emergency Response Teams

To mitigate the crisis, multiple government agencies have been mobilized to monitor the situation, provide assistance, and conduct rescue operations where necessary. These include:
– Ghana Police Service – Managing traffic, enforcing safety protocols, and responding to incidents.
– Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) – Assisting in evacuations, conducting searches, and managing fire-related hazards.
– Ghana Armed Forces – Supporting in large-scale rescue and relief efforts, particularly in high-risk areas.
– National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) – Coordinating disaster response, providing relief supplies, and managing affected communities.
– Local Council Authorities – Leading community-based evacuations and ensuring compliance with safety directives.

Residents in flood-prone zones are specifically advised to relocate to higher, safer ground immediately and report emergencies or distressed individuals to the nearest security or emergency personnel without delay.

Official Communication and Public Cooperation

The Ministry of the Interior has stressed the importance of public cooperation in adhering to official guidelines. Citizens are urged to:
– Rely solely on verified government channels for updates, as unverified information may lead to panic or unsafe decisions.
– Avoid sharing unverified reports on social media or other platforms, which could contribute to misinformation.
– Follow instructions from emergency personnel, including police, firefighters, and NADMO officials, who are on the ground managing the crisis.

Emergency Contact Numbers for Immediate Assistance

For those requiring urgent help or reporting distress, the following dedicated emergency lines are available:
– Ghana Police Service: 18555 (for non-life-threatening incidents) or 112 (for immediate police assistance).
– Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS): 192 (for fire-related emergencies or rescues).
– National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO): 112 (for disaster-related emergencies, including flooding and evacuations).

Government’s Commitment to Public Safety

The Ministry has reaffirmed that the safety and well-being of Ghanaian citizens remain the government’s top priority. Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as conditions evolve. Relief efforts, including medical aid, food supplies, and temporary shelter arrangements, are being expedited for affected communities.

The Ministry extends its deep concern to all individuals and families impacted by the flooding and assures the public that every possible measure is being taken to minimize harm, restore normalcy, and ensure a swift recovery. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official sources and prioritize safety above all else during this challenging period.

Note: This advisory remains in effect until further notice. The Ministry will issue additional updates as the situation develops. Stay safe, stay informed, and cooperate with emergency personnel.
