Manchester United have paid tribute to former goalkeeper David De Gea – and received an emotional response from the Fiorentina stopper.
November 7th is a pretty big day in terms of birthdays for former Manchester United stars.
Rio Ferdinand turns 46 today whilst David De Gea turns 34 with United sending birthday wishes to both former United stars.
Ferdinand was one of the finest centre backs of the Sir Alex Ferguson era whilst De Gea overcame a shaky start to rack up more than 400 Premier League appearances.
The pair are still popular with United fans and De Gea has now sent a message back to United as he prepares for European action this evening.
David De Gea message to Manchester United
De Gea will be action for Fiorentina against APOEL in the Europa Conference league as La Viola seek a third final appearance in a row in this competition.
United will be taking on PAOK in the Europa League, so this is a busy night for both United and De Gea.
United posted an Instagram message to De Gea, stating that they were ‘sending big birthday love’ to De Gea.
The goalkeeper responded with just six words as he showed his love for United – ‘one a red, always a red’.
De Gea was released by United in 2023, a rather divisive decision at the time as United chose not to hand him a new deal.
De Gea then spent the entire 2023-24 season out of the game before signing with Fiorentina back in August.
United may have let De Gea go but it’s clear that he still feels strongly about the club and keeps United in his heart.
How is De Gea faring for Fiorentina?
De Gea is earning around £32,000-a-week at Fiorentina, a major drop from the money he was earning at United.
Criticism came De Gea’s way upon arriving in Italy and some rustiness should really have been expected after a year out of the game.
De Gea has really started to impress though and saved not one but two penalties against AC Milan in October.
De Gea is now being branded ‘world class’ in Italy with Fiorentina reaping the rewards from taking a chance on him.
Now 34, De Gea may still have a few more years left in him and he will be looking to continue his fine form in Italy after a strong start in Florence.
