Nollywood mourns the loss of one of its brightest stars, Alexx Ekubo, as the acclaimed actor succumbed to advanced metastatic kidney cancer at the age of 40. His family confirmed his passing on Monday evening in a private Lagos hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for the terminal illness. The news has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, fans, and industry leaders who celebrated his talent, philanthropy, and enduring legacy.

A Life Cut Short: The Rise of a Nollywood Icon

Born Alexx Ekubo on April 10, 1986, in Rivers State, Nigeria, the actor’s journey from a law graduate to a Nollywood superstar was nothing short of extraordinary. After earning a degree in Law from the University of Calabar, Ekubo initially pursued a career in the legal profession before his passion for acting led him to compete in the Mr. Nigeria pageant in 2010, where he emerged as a standout contestant. This marked the beginning of his meteoric rise in Nigeria’s thriving film industry.

His breakthrough came in 2005 with his debut film, Sinners in the House, followed by a string of notable performances that cemented his reputation as a versatile and charismatic actor. Ekubo’s career reached new heights in 2013 when he won Best Supporting Actor at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his role as Andre Dikeh in Weekend Getaway. His collaboration with Yemi Alade in the music video for Johnny further amplified his visibility, showcasing his ability to transcend the screen and captivate audiences across multiple platforms.

Awards, Recognition, and Humanitarian Impact

Beyond his on-screen achievements, Ekubo’s contributions to Nollywood and society at large earned him numerous accolades. In 2016, he was honored with Best Actor of the Year at the Best of Nollywood Awards, a testament to his dominance in the industry. His influence extended beyond entertainment, as he was recognized by Nigeria’s First Lady in 2018 with a Special Recognition Award for his role in shaping the country’s creative sector.

In 2020, Ekubo was inducted into the UN’s Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) under 40, acknowledging his impact on both entertainment and social development. The following year, he received an honorary doctorate in arts and culture from the Institut Supérieur de Communication et de Gestion in Benin, a rare honor that underscored his global recognition.

His humanitarian efforts were equally commendable. In 2021, he was awarded the Nigerian National Award of Excellence as the Global Social Giving Actor of the Year, highlighting his dedication to charitable causes. Additionally, the Sapio Club, a Nigerian organization focused on addressing social and national challenges, presented him with a Certificate of Excellence for his philanthropic work.

A Brief but Courageous Battle

For months, Ekubo’s health had been a subject of concern among his fans and colleagues. His last public social media post dated back to December 2024, prompting speculation about his well-being. His family, in a heartfelt statement shared on his Instagram page, revealed that he had been battling advanced metastatic kidney cancer with remarkable strength and faith.

“Throughout this difficult journey, he bore his pain with remarkable strength, unwavering faith, and enduring hope, believing that one day his testimony would be shared with the world,” the family wrote. They called for privacy and prayers as they mourned his loss, urging the public to respect their grief during this tender time.

Tributes Pour In from Nollywood and Beyond

The news of Ekubo’s passing has left the Nollywood community in profound shock and sorrow. Fellow actors, producers, and industry veterans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the talented, humble, and compassionate actor whose life touched many.

Funke Akindele, a fellow actor and producer with whom Ekubo starred in Omo Ghetto – The Saga (2020), shared a poignant message:

“Rest in Peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. You kept telling me you were fine. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. Ore mi like you fondly called me—I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared.”

Godwin Nnadiekwe, another close friend and colleague, described the loss as heartbreaking, stating:

“Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan.”

Lancelot Imasuen, the filmmaker who gave Ekubo his first professional role, called his passing “devastating and unbelievable.” Imasuen’s words reflect the deep impact Ekubo had on those who worked alongside him, particularly those who witnessed his early struggles and eventual rise to stardom.

A Life of Controversy and Triumph

Ekubo’s journey was not without its challenges. In 2021, he briefly found himself at the center of controversy when his then-fiancée, Nigerian-American actress and model Fancy Acholonu, called off their engagement just months before their wedding. Despite the public scrutiny, Ekubo remained professional, focusing on his career and philanthropic endeavors.

Legacy of a Multifaceted Talent

Alexx Ekubo’s legacy extends far beyond his acting career. He was a visionary, a philanthropist, and a beacon of hope for many. His ability to balance commercial success with social responsibility set him apart in an industry often criticized for its lack of depth.

As Nollywood reflects on the loss of such a talented and compassionate figure, his family’s call for privacy serves as a reminder of the personal pain behind the public persona. Yet, his story—one of resilience, creativity, and generosity—will continue to inspire generations of artists and dreamers in Nigeria and beyond.

“One day his testimony would be shared with the world,” his family had hoped. Today, that testament lives on in the hearts of those who knew him and the countless lives he touched through his art and kindness.
