Ghana Faces Urgent Call to Revive HIV Awareness Campaigns Amid Rising Infections and Persistent Misconceptions

Ghana’s fight against HIV/AIDS is at a critical juncture, with experts warning that declining public awareness campaigns and persistent misconceptions are fueling new infections, particularly among the youth. Mrs. Aba Oppong, Executive Director of Rights and Responsibilities Initiatives Ghana (RRIG), has urged the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), and other stakeholders to intensify nationwide HIV awareness initiatives to safeguard the country’s productive population.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, Mrs. Oppong highlighted that while Ghana has made significant strides in expanding access to HIV testing and treatment, public education on prevention has deteriorated compared to the vigorous, nationwide campaigns of previous years. She emphasized that the lack of sustained awareness has led to dangerous misconceptions about the disease, undermining progress in curbing its spread.

Declining Awareness and Dangerous Myths Fueling HIV Transmission

Mrs. Oppong noted that public visibility of HIV-related messaging has diminished, leaving many Ghanaians—particularly the youth—vulnerable to infection. Some members of the public now believe HIV no longer exists due to the absence of prominent awareness campaigns, while others attribute the disease to supernatural forces, such as evil spirits. These misconceptions, she warned, are directly contributing to the persistence of HIV in communities.

Additionally, many Ghanaians underestimate the severity of HIV, perceiving it as less threatening than other diseases. This false sense of security has led to reckless behavior, particularly among young people, who remain at high risk of contracting the virus.

Ashanti Region Remains a Hotspot for HIV Transmission

Data indicates that the Ashanti Region, including Kumasi, continues to have a substantial number of people living with HIV. Mrs. Oppong stressed that without urgent intervention, the region—and the nation as a whole—could face a resurgence of infections.

She urged stakeholders to revive the intensive awareness campaigns that once yielded tangible results, including reduced stigma, increased testing, and better prevention practices. The widespread use of social media and radio stations today provides unprecedented opportunities to reach young people with evidence-based information on HIV prevention.

Children as Young as 15 Years Contracting HIV: A Worrying Trend

One of the most alarming developments, according to Mrs. Oppong, is the increasing number of young people—some as young as 15—contracting HIV. She described this trend as “deeply concerning”, attributing it to lack of sexual education, peer pressure, and limited access to accurate information.

To address this, she called on educational institutions to strengthen comprehensive health education programs, ensuring students receive age-appropriate, scientifically accurate guidance on safe sexual practices, HIV prevention, and the importance of regular testing.

Parents, she added, play a critical role in protecting their children. She urged them to engage in open conversations about risky sexual behavior, consent, and the consequences of unprotected sex, reinforcing that prevention starts at home.

Stigma and Silence: Barriers to HIV Control

Stigma remains one of the biggest obstacles in the fight against HIV. Many people fear discrimination and avoid disclosure of their HIV status, leading to delayed treatment and continued transmission. Mrs. Oppong emphasized that reducing stigma requires sustained public education, encouraging open dialogue about HIV without shame or judgment.

She urged individuals living with HIV to share their stories to break the silence and encourage others to get tested voluntarily. “We cannot afford to lower our guards,” she warned, “and allow our youth to become the next generation of HIV cases.”

Collective Responsibility: How Ghana Can Turn the Tide

Mrs. Oppong’s call for collective action underscores the need for multi-sectoral collaboration in combating HIV. She highlighted several key strategies to reverse the trend:

  1. Revival of Nationwide Awareness Campaigns – Leveraging social media, radio, and community outreach to re-educate the public on HIV risks and prevention methods.
  2. Strengthening School-Based Sexual Education – Ensuring comprehensive, evidence-based health education is integrated into school curricula to empower young people with knowledge.
  3. Parental and Community Engagement – Encouraging open conversations about safe sex, consent, and HIV testing within families and communities.
  4. Reducing Stigma Through Public Advocacy – Promoting acceptance and support for people living with HIV to encourage voluntary testing and treatment adherence.
  5. Promoting Safe Sexual Practices – Advocating for condom use, regular HIV testing, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as critical prevention tools.

A Call to Action: Protecting Ghana’s Future

Mrs. Oppong’s message is clear: Ghana cannot afford to relax its efforts in the fight against HIV. The rising infections among youth, declining awareness, and persistent stigma demand immediate and sustained action. She urged all Ghanaians—government agencies, health workers, educators, parents, and individuals—to take responsibility in preventing new infections, supporting those affected, and rejecting discrimination.

“We all have a role to play,” she concluded. “By adopting safe sexual practices, getting tested regularly, supporting people living with HIV, and rejecting stigma, we can help end the spread of this preventable disease and secure a healthier future for Ghana.” The time for action is now.
