The recent passing of Akua Donkor, the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has ignited a flurry of speculation regarding its potential effects on the ballot placements of presidential candidates in Ghana’s upcoming elections. Social media is abuzz with discussions about whether her death could trigger last-minute alterations to the arrangement of candidates on the ballot paper.
This speculation has resonated strongly among Ghanaians, particularly those engaged in online discourse. Many are questioning if Donkor’s demise might result in a reshuffling of the ballot, altering the positions that candidates have long been preparing for. The urgency of this concern is heightened by the fact that many political campaigns have leveraged specific ballot placements as part of their branding strategies, often turning these placements into memes to engage voters.
However, it appears that the Electoral Commission (EC) has taken steps to ensure stability in the ballot process. Recently, officials confirmed that the printing of ballot papers has already commenced, indicating that all candidates will retain their previously assigned slots. According to the EC, any last-minute changes would not only pose logistical challenges but also incur significant costs, making adjustments impractical at this stage.
Interestingly, the conversation surrounding potential ballot changes has been further fueled by remarks from Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), commonly known as Chairman Wontumi. Weeks prior to Donkor’s passing, Wontumi suggested that he could exert influence to move former President John Mahama from his assigned position at No. 8 to either No. 6 or 7. Such statements have raised eyebrows and contributed to the swirling rumors regarding the dynamics of the upcoming elections.
