Manchester United defender Leny Yoro says the club have snapped up a true gem in Chido Obi.
The 17-year-old arrived from Arsenal in the summer with the Red Devils having to pay compensation in order to secure his signature following the end of his contract. Speaking about Obi’s potential, Yoro predicts he can go right to the very top:
“Chido is talented. He can become one of the world’s best strikers in my opinion, if he continues his development. He scores a lot of goals and is a good boy, so I also hope that he will become one of the best.”
“He has had his chance [to score] in a few games, and I, of course, hope that he will soon open his goal account in the first team. That will help the team.”
Obi has already caught the eye in first-team games
Despite not having made his senior debut prior to his arrival at Old Trafford, his impressive performances for the Under 18s led to head coach Ruben Amorim selecting him on the bench for several first-team fixtures.
Obi came on for his first appearance in the defeat to Tottenham in February, and he has played 3 further matches since then. His performance in the FA Cup loss to Fulham early last month was particularly impressive.
Amorim is managing the United starlet’s minutes
Asked whether the teenager would be involved in the Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest this week, Amorim said that his development would be better served by featuring in the FA Youth Cup.
Obi played the full 90 minutes as the young Reds were knocked out on penalties by Aston Villa. The striker did not get on the scoresheet and he didn’t even get a chance to take a spot-kick in the shootout.
