‘A Huge Number of Our Population’ Voting for Afenyo-Markin Due to Money Incentives”

Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the Member of Parliament for Agona West, has raised serious concerns over alleged vote-buying activities in her constituency, specifically targeting the neighboring Effutu Constituency.

According to Radio Gold Live on Friday, October 25, 2024, In a recent interview on Metro TV aired on October 24, 2024, Morrison claimed that many of her constituents are being incentivized to switch their votes to Effutu, where MP Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is purportedly offering them GH¢1000.

Morrison expressed frustration over the perceived inequity in resources allocated to her constituency compared to others. “Agona West has 31 electoral areas, while Afenyo-Markin’s Effutu has only 18,” she stated.

She highlighted the disparity, stating, “If they give Agona West GH¢10, they also give Afenyo-Markin GH¢10,” which complicates her ability to address the needs of her constituents.

In her remarks, she said, “A huge number of our population when it is time for voting say Afenyo-Markin would give them GH¢1000 so they transfer their votes to Winneba.”

This trend, according to Morrison, has contributed to a declining population in Agona West, complicating efforts to achieve district status for her constituency.

Morrison called on those who have switched their votes to return during the registration period, asserting that a clearer picture of the population will support her case for a division of Agona West and Agona Central.

In response to these allegations, Afenyo-Markin has denied the claims, stating that all MPs in the involved constituencies met to discuss strategies to prevent vote transfers.
