According to reports by 3News, Pearl Agbomadzi, a 20-year-old interior decorator, has been charged with the murder of a 74-year-old British national, John Scott Hughes, who was residing in Ghana. According to court documents, Hughes called Agbomadzi on August 2, 2024, to meet him at American House in Accra. From there, the pair went to Philipo’s Movie House in East Legon, a well-known entertainment venue, where Hughes booked a private room for himself and Agbomadzi, described by prosecutors as his girlfriend.

The couple reportedly engaged in a consensual intimate encounter after watching a film in the room. During this time, however, Hughes became unconscious and collapsed on the floor. Agbomadzi immediately sought assistance from the venue’s staff, alerting them to Hughes’s condition. The police arrived on the scene, and Hughes was transported to Legon Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by medical staff. The complainant in the case is Hughes’s wife.

At a court hearing on October 24, Agbomadzi’s lawyer, John Baptist Ayedze, requested bail for his client, who has remained in police custody since the incident. Prosecutor Frederick Adu Gyamfi, an Assistant State Attorney, did not oppose the bail application. High Court Judge Lydia Osei Marfo subsequently granted bail at GHC 100,000 with one surety. In her remarks, Judge Marfo advised older men to consider the health risks associated with engaging in relationships with significantly younger partners.
