In his recent State of the Nation Address, President John Dramani Mahama delivered a firm warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and their Minority in Parliament, urging them not to boycott the upcoming national economic forum.
He reminded them of their absence at the previous Senchi Forum and stressed the necessity of unity in tackling Ghana’s urgent economic challenges.
The Mahama administration is currently facing scrutiny, especially after Dr. Stephen Amoah, a lawmaker, claimed that the government had borrowed GHS 59 billion in under fifty days. He raised concerns, asking, “Where did they get the money for all the payments the President [Mahama] is referring to?” This rapid borrowing has drawn attention, particularly when compared to former President Akufo-Addo’s GHS 37 billion in borrowing over seven years.
In his address, Mahama highlighted youth unemployment as a critical issue threatening national security. To address this, he announced the creation of the Ministry of Youth Development, saying, “Youth unemployment has caused despair and frustration, which poses a significant security risk to our country and needs urgent attention.”
Despite these challenges, Mahama expressed hope that the efforts being made this year would have long-term benefits for the nation. He confidently stated, “Together we shall build the Ghana we all want,” encouraging all Ghanaians to actively participate in the National Economic Dialogue set for March 3rd and 4th, 2025. This forum aims to bring together various stakeholders to discuss practical solutions for Ghana’s economic issues.
