Dr. Adwoa Awuku, an eye care specialist in charge of the Abesim Eye Clinic in the Sunyani Municipality, has warned that about 95 percent of glaucoma and related eye diseases have no symptoms.
She urged the public to undergo regular eye check-ups to assess their eye health. She noted that as the world marks World Glaucoma Day (WGD), free eye screening exercises are being conducted at various eye facilities, and she encouraged the public to take advantage of these opportunities for eye tests.
Celebrated annually between March 9 and March 15, WGD aims to promote good eye health and vision. The theme for the 2025 celebration is “Green Vision for a Brighter Tomorrow.”
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) near Sunyani, Dr. Awuku stated that glaucoma is the second leading cause of preventable blindness. She emphasized that “glaucoma is irreversible,” but it can be managed to prevent further damage to the optic nerves.
She highlighted that early detection is essential for treating glaucoma, which may involve surgery. She also noted that the disease is hereditary, underscoring the need for increased awareness and regular eye check-ups.
Dr. Awuku cautioned the public against self-medication and the unauthorized use of eye drops for managing eye diseases, warning that such practices could worsen glaucoma and lead to further complications.
