Dear GhanaWeb,

My sister has been married for 10 years.

Her husband left for the United States just a year after their marriage and never returned.

Along the way, he built a mansion for my sister and bought her a car.

When he became financially stable, he brought his mother to the States, and she returned a year later.

He explained that he did this because his mother had sacrificed so much for him, and this was his way of letting her enjoy the fruits of her labour.

The second time, he brought his sister, who is married with four children.

A year later, he brought his sister’s eldest son. When my dad raised concerns about this, his mother dismissed it, saying at least he had built a house and bought a car for my sister, so what else did she need?

Ten years of being alone with no children of her own. My sister was always calm and composed, so often someone had to step in when things weren’t right.

One day, my dad drove to her husband’s house, told her to pack her things, and brought her back.

He then went to the in-laws’ house and returned the house and car keys that her husband had bought for her.

He even presented drinks to symbolise that he was dissolving the marriage.

It turned into a scuffle, and guess what?

Her husband returned to the country. Nine years of being absent, and the only reason he came back was because the divorce was now on the table.

The worst part is, he didn’t come back alone. He came with his two children from another woman he had been involved with while abroad.

His mother and sister knew about the children but never thought it necessary to inform my sister. Since she was always the quiet one, they took advantage of her.

Thank God for my father and brothers. My dad fought back.

During the final meeting, he laid a curse on their family. I watched as he sat on the floor, crying, and cursed every single member of their family for making a fool of his daughter.

When the divorce case went to court, the court offered my sister the car and house as compensation.

My dad refused, saying that because he had cursed them, she had no business taking anything from them.

Now, my dad is doing everything he can to get my sister’s life back on track. It breaks my heart because she’s been the most decent of all my dad’s children.

The ultimate best child. She has lived a drama-free life and has always made our parents proud. But now, she’s literally going crazy. I don’t know what to do to make her happy again.

She feels like she’s wasted 10 years of her life, and what does she have to show for it? I suggested therapy, and it’s been a month, but she’s still the same.

I’m confused and don’t know what to do to help her. I just want to see her happy again. Has anyone been through something like this before? How did you handle it?
