President John Dramani Mahama, on March 13, 2025, appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

In a statement issued by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President, in accordance with the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, made the appointment.

“President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.

He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement read.

Profile of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno

COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno (PO 001731) was born on December 27, 1965. With over 40 years in law enforcement, he has risen through the ranks with exceptional dedication and professionalism.

According to reports from 3news.com, COP Yohuno was recruited into the Ghana Police Service as a lance corporal on August 1, 1985.

He started his academic journey at Okuapeman School before continuing at West Africa Secondary School.

He later pursued a bachelor’s degree at the University of Ghana, followed by an Executive MBA in Project Management from the Institute of Professional Studies (now UPSA).

COP Yohuno was appointed as Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP) in charge of Operations by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

From combating armed robbery syndicates to managing high-stakes national security operations, his leadership has consistently delivered results.

•2007-2009: As the Divisional Commander for Accra Central, Yohuno demonstrated his ability to manage complex policing environments with calm and competence.

•2012: Promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), reflecting his growing influence in law enforcement.

•2015: As Director-General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD), he implemented key reforms that significantly reduced road traffic accidents.

•2016: Promoted to Commissioner of Police (COP), where he continued to build on his successes, eventually serving as Director-General for Special Duties and Administration.

•July 17, 2024: His appointment as Deputy IGP for Operations marked the pinnacle of his career, placing him at the helm of critical operations aimed at ensuring national security
