IMANI Ghana and security expert Professor Kwesi Aning have filed a suit at the Supreme Court to prevent President John Dramani Mahama from removing the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and other heads of security agencies ahead of a pending ruling set for May 2025.

In their suit, they argue that removing the security heads before the court’s decision would be unfair.

The plaintiffs have petitioned the court to issue an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants, including President John Dramani Mahama and the respective councils of the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Police Service, National Fire Service, and Ghana Prisons Service, from removing, terminating, dismissing, sacking, suspending, or otherwise interfering with the positions of the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, the Comptroller of the Ghana Immigration Service, the Director-General of the National Fire Service, and the Inspector-General of Police.

They contend that the case raises constitutional issues and that the balance of convenience favors the applicants.

The plaintiffs urged the court to grant the injunction to prevent any premature dismissals before the case is fully adjudicated.

This development follows widespread reports that President Mahama intends to dismiss the IGP and other top security officers.
