The Alliance of Drivers Ghana has announced a 20 percent increase in lorry fares, effective Monday, March 17, 2025, in response to rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of vehicle maintenance.
In a statement dated Thursday, March 13, 2025, and signed by the General Secretary, George Baffour Owusu Afriyie, the association cited recent fuel price hikes as the primary reason for the fare increase.
Additionally, the drivers stated that the prices of spare parts, vehicle engines, and engine oil have also surged, making it difficult for commercial drivers to sustain their operations.
The group emphasised that commercial drivers are self-employed and do not receive salaries from the government, expressing frustration over returning home empty-handed despite long hours of work.
“How can we go to work and come back home empty-handed? We do not receive salaries from the government. As self-employed individuals, we manage ourselves and take care of our families,” the statement read.
