In a recent interview, Murtala Ibrahim, the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, strongly criticized remarks made by Hassan Tampuli, CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), who compared fellow legislator Sam George to the notorious Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.
The controversy began when Tampuli, during a public speech, likened Sam George’s political style to that of Idi Amin, a comparison that quickly provoked public backlash. Ibrahim, responding to the comments in a television interview, called Tampuli’s statement “baseless” and an insult to George, describing it as an example of poor political behavior.
“It is completely absurd to compare Sam George, a respected MP, to a dictator like Idi Amin. Such comments reflect immaturity and a lack of respect in our political discussions,” Ibrahim stated, emphasizing the need for more dignified political dialogue.
Ibrahim also took the opportunity to criticize Tampuli personally, making a humorous remark about his height in a playful reference to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. “How would you feel if we said you’re as short as Nana Addo? That doesn’t mean we should belittle others,” he said, adding humor to his criticism.
The exchange has sparked a variety of reactions, with some expressing support for Sam George while others question the tone and manner of the back-and-forth.
A Ghanaian commentator claimed the NPP was planning to hold a press conference in response to Murtala Ibrahim’s comments. A screenshot of reactions has circulated.
Tampuli has yet to publicly respond to the criticism, and it remains uncertain how this incident will affect the country’s political climate.
