The residents say the supply of water has brought them life
Residents of Sagnarigu in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region have expressed their gratitude to their Member of Parliament (MP), Atta Issah, for commissioning a Community Water Supply Centre for the township.
The residents noted that the MP has not only provided them with accessible drinking water but has also “brought us life because, from today, we don’t have to travel long distances for water.”
Daud Alhassan Wunpini, a resident of Sagnarigu, shared with reporters that he previously had to pay exorbitant amounts to water suppliers to get pipe-borne water for his family, even though the main reservoir of the Ghana Water Company was just a few minutes’ walk from his home.
“We thank God that today, we can have good drinking water almost for free. We’ve suffered for so long, even though the Ghana Water Company has a big reservoir at Tamasco. Our pipes never flow, especially during the dry season. So, this project will help us a lot. Atta Issah has brought us life because, from today, we don’t have to travel long distances or pay exorbitant amounts to tanker operators for water,” he said.
The solar-powered water supply centre, funded by the Qatar Charity Foundation, was commissioned on Sunday, March 2, 2025 by representatives of both the MP and the Qatar Charity Foundation.
The project is expected to bring relief to residents of the municipal capital, Sagnarigu, where access to potable water remains a challenge. It will also serve students of Bagabaga Primary and Junior High Schools.
Commissioning the project on behalf of the MP at Bagabaga in the Sagnarigu Municipality, the Sagnarigu Constituency Treasurer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abdulai Imorow Gong, expressed gratitude for the initiative.
Speaking on behalf of the MP, NDC Constituency Communications Officer, Abdulai Mohammed Amin, emphasized that the water supply centre would significantly reduce the hardship residents face in obtaining clean drinking water.
“Our community has struggled for water for a long time. During the dry season, our mothers and sisters traveled long distances for good drinking water. Thank God for giving us an MP who cares about our well-being. Today, our women no longer have to travel far for clean water,” he said.
He further noted that the project was in fulfillment of a campaign promise made by the NDC MP, adding that many more such projects would be initiated across the constituency to improve water access.
Amin also commended the Qatar Charity Foundation for its generous support and appealed to the organization to continue assisting with development projects in the area.
For years, the Sagnarigu Township has struggled with an irregular water supply from the Ghana Water Company, despite the fact that the company’s main reservoir, which serves Tamale, is located within the municipality.
