There seems to be a serious misunderstanding in the family of the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), the late Akua Donkor, over her funeral, following the release of an obituary by some members of the family.

The misunderstanding has been displayed in full view of the public, made during media interviews.

The confusion in the family, from the pronouncements of its members, concerns the amount of money it has received as funeral donations so far and the date of the funeral.

On Monday, February 3, 2025, the family’s Nana Yaw Brefo and one of the daughters of the late Akua Donkor debunked reports of receiving a donation of GH¢300,000 (GH¢3 billion) to organise the one-week celebration.

Nana Yaw Brefo said that they only received GH¢100,000 (GH¢1 billion), but he has been hearing in the media that they received GH¢300,000 (GH¢3 billion).

He said that the donation was not given to him directly but was given to one of the daughters of the late founder of the GFP, who, in turn, brought it to him.

“The donation we received was one billion; all the family members know that it is one billion, but I don’t know who is going around saying it is three billion,” he said in Twi.

The daughter of Akua Donkor, who was also on the same program on Onua TV, on Monday, corroborated that the family had received GH¢100,000 (GH¢1 billion).

She said that one of her sisters was part of the family members who went for the money, which was given to them by the then Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.

“I asked my sister the amount of money they were given. She said the money was given to them by Frema Opare, and the amount was GH¢100,000 (GH¢1 billion),” she said, also in Twi.

The family head also indicated that the March 29, 2025, date on the obituary in circulation was tentative and had not been approved by the family.

He said that his family had not finalised the date for the funeral and was waiting on the current John Dramani Mahama government to settle before informing it of the date but that they were ever willing to change it at the government’s request.

But Mary, another daughter of Akua Donkor, who confirmed that she shared the obituary, indicated that she got the details published in it from the family head and so she was surprised they were saying they knew nothing about it.

Also, in a separate interview on Onua TV, on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, Mary said that she even showed copies of the obituary to the family head, who accepted them.

“The heads of the family are the ones who gave me all the names… I printed the posters and invitation cards and showed them to the family head. He said they were okay, and he took some of them,” she said in Twi.

On the GH¢100,000 donation for the one-week celebration, Mary said that she knew nothing about the money.

She said that she even had to go and borrow money for the one-week celebration because she was told by the family that the GH¢100,000 was used to refurbish Akua Donkor’s home.
