A 23-year-old abandoned maternity block at Tafo Government Hospital in the Ashanti Region is severely affecting maternal healthcare in the area.
The project, initiated in 2002 by then-Member of Parliament Hon. Dr. Akoto Osei during President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration, has been left to deteriorate, with the building showing significant wear and tear over time.
Originally intended to reduce child mortality and improve maternal healthcare, the project has instead become a white elephant.
According to hospital administrators, the maternity block currently has only two beds, drastically limiting healthcare services.
Daniel Adu Amankwaa, the hospital’s administrator, told OTEC News that completing the project would allow the facility to accommodate more patients, as it serves as a major referral center for over five neighboring municipalities.
He emphasized that while staff remain dedicated to their work, the lack of infrastructure is hindering their efforts.
Patients have appealed to regional authorities to prioritize the project’s completion, sharing difficulties such as being forced to sleep on the floor due to inadequate space.
They urged the NDC government to take action, stressing the urgent need for improved maternal healthcare facilities in the region.
