The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Jean Mensa, has clarified why she and her deputies were absent from the official swearing-in ceremony of President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on January 7, 2025.
Addressing the issue, Madam Mensa stated that it has been a long-standing policy for EC officials not to attend presidential inauguration ceremonies. She emphasized that this practice has been maintained throughout her tenure in office.
“Let me say that I was here in the country, but I think the policy is that the commission members, chairperson, and deputies don’t attend swearing-ins,” she explained.
Furthermore, she disclosed that the EC had not received any official invitation to the event.
“It is also by invitation, and we have never received an invitation to swearing-in. I know that all the dignitaries and those special guests are invited. But it has always been a matter of policy that we don’t attend swearing-ins. At least for the duration that I have been here or the duration we’ve been in office, we’ve never attended any swearing-in,” she added.
Her clarification comes in response to public concerns regarding the absence of EC officials at the historic event. The commission’s adherence to this policy reflects its commitment to maintaining neutrality in the electoral process.
