Dead body discovered floating on the Volta Lake at Adomi Bridge

A dead male body has been discovered floating on the Volta River at Atimpoku in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

David Brown, the Asuogyaman District NADMO Director told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that an immigration officer on duty at the Adomi bridge noticed the decomposing body floating on the river and alerted authorities.

He said the body was recovered from the lake after a coordinated effort comprising the District Police Commander, Environmental Health Officers, NADMO, and local divers.

He said most of the time, when they discover such situations, they ask for a coroner’s form from the Senchi Magistrate Court to bury the corpse, but in this case, they have opted to thoroughly investigate to determine the cause of the death, so the body has been sent to the Accra police hospital for investigation and identification.

“Since Asuogyaman is a site where a lot of leisure and tourism activities occur, I think the man may have drowned during the Valentine’s Day celebration,” he said.

He said the man believed to be in his forties, had dreadlocks and was well-dressed.

“The way he was well-dressed is one of the reasons why we opted to send the mortal remains to the police hospital for investigation because there’s nothing of a cut or wound on his body even though the body was decomposing” he said.

Drowning occurrences have unfortunately become more regular in recent years along the Asuogyaman length of Volta Lake, owing primarily to recreational, local travellers using boat and fishing activity in the area.
