The former Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on African countries to urgently prioritize sustainability to achieve economic growth, social equity, and environmental protection without compromising the future.

Speaking at the Alliance for Science (@ScienceAlly) Global Consortium meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Prempeh underscored the continent’s pressing sustainability challenges, calling for decisive leadership and collective action to ensure long-term progress.

“Addressing the sustainability of our planet is not an option it is an obligation,” he stated, stressing the need for political leadership that champions sustainability across all sectors.

He shared this message in a post via X on February 26, 2025.

“We need political champions to promote sustainability! But beyond that, we also need citizens, businesses, and institutions to hold leaders accountable. Political champions alone cannot drive change, we must all demand sustainable policies, participate in green initiatives, and make responsible choices in our daily lives he urged,” he added.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh further emphasized that beyond political will, citizens, businesses, and institutions play a critical role in holding leaders accountable.

He also noted that real change depends on active public engagement rather than relying solely on political figures.

The discussions at the Global Consortium meeting served as a crucial step toward repositioning Africa for a sustainable future.

Participants expressed optimism about the outcomes, emphasizing the importance of ongoing collaboration in shaping policies that safeguard both present and future generations.

The event reinforced the urgency of sustainability efforts and the need for a united approach in tackling the continent’s environmental and socio-economic challenges.
