The Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has stated that the Mahama-led government inherited an economy in distress, describing it as a “sinkhole” that requires urgent restructuring to restore stability.

Speaking at the 72nd-anniversary grand durbar of Keta Senior High Technical School, Haruna Iddrisu emphasized that resetting the economy is essential for the government to undertake large-scale infrastructure development, particularly in the education sector.

“The economy President John Mahama is inheriting is a sinkhole economy in distress that needs to be reset and put on track for him to deliver massive infrastructure support to our educational institution”, he said.

The sector minister also highlighted the pressing need to expand infrastructure in second-cycle institutions to accommodate the increasing number of students enrolled under the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

Additionally, the minister outlined the government’s plan to implement a comprehensive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) program from kindergarten through tertiary education.

This initiative, he explained, aims to produce a technologically skilled workforce capable of driving economic growth.

“The President, your President, will introduce digital literacy from the kindergarten level and extend it to tertiary education. There will also be significant investment in innovation and technology hubs not only in technical and secondary institutions but also in higher education,” he stated.

Reiterating the challenges faced by the incoming administration, Haruna Iddrisu stressed that President John Mahama’s priority will be to revive the struggling economy to create the fiscal space needed for meaningful investments in education and other critical sectors.
