In the wake of the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, during a Ghana Premier League match at Nsoatreman FC’s Nana Kromansah Park on February 2, 2025, Asante Kotoko’s Communications Director, Samuel Sarfo Duku, has refuted claims of a rift between the two clubs.
Addressing the media on February 24, Duku stated, “We are not at war with Nsoatreman. We are one people, and we are all fighting for a just cause. The incident has happened, and we will ensure that justice is served. However, we remain a family and will work to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Duku also noted that Asante Kotoko has not received official communication from Nsoatreman FC regarding the incident but emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration to prevent future tragedies.
In response, Nsoatreman FC released a statement expressing condolences to the bereaved family and affirming their commitment to assisting law enforcement agencies in the investigation. The club stated, “It is important to state on record that since the incident, management has been actively assisting the police in investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
The incident has led to the arrest of several individuals, including Nsoatreman FC officials, as investigations continue. Both clubs have called for patience and support from their supporters as authorities work diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Asante Kotoko has announced a temporary suspension of competitive activities to honor the memory of Nana Pooley, with plans to resume after his final funeral rites on March 6, 2025. This period of reflection underscores the club’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all stakeholders in Ghanaian football.
The tragic event has sparked a broader conversation about security measures at football matches in Ghana. Stakeholders are now emphasizing the need for enhanced safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future, ensuring that football remains a unifying and joyous event for all.
