The wife of Nana Pooley, the devoted Asante Kotoko fan who tragically lost his life in a violent clash at a Ghana Premier League match on Sunday, has spoken publicly for the first time since the incident. Gifty Yaa Frimpong, who had been eagerly awaiting her husband’s return after he traveled to watch the match against Nsoatreman FC, is still in shock over his untimely death.
In an emotional interview with LUV FM, Gifty broke down as she recalled her last conversation with her husband, who had called her several times before the game. “He told me he was going to watch the game. I’m still waiting for him, leaving everything in God’s hands,” she said, struggling to accept the loss.
Pooley was fatally stabbed during violent fan clashes at the Nana Kormansah II Stadium. His death has shaken the football community, his family, and fans alike. Gifty shared that during their final call, Pooley mentioned being denied entry to the stadium, but she reassured him he’d get in. Hours later, she learned of his tragic death.
In response, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended the league from matchday 20 onward and plans to meet with clubs and supporters’ groups to discuss security improvements. The incident has reignited discussions on fan safety and the need for stricter security measures.
An eyewitness has accused former Minister Ignatius Baffour-Awuah of possibly contributing to the escalation of violence that led to Pooley’s death, claiming tensions escalated after Baffour-Awuah’s anger towards Kotoko’s Head of Technical Directorate, Kwasi Appiah.
