Some constituency executives at the press conference
New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executives at Dome Kwabenya have blamed the former Member of Parliament of the area, Sarah Adwoa Safo, for the party’s defeat in the December 7 parliamentary elections.
At a recent press conference, Robert Osei Bonsu, the Constituency Chairman,
noted that her refusal to campaign and her prolonged absence from parliamentary duties contributed significantly to the party’s poor performance in the 2024 elections.
“At all times, Adwoa Safo has received support from key figures in the party. In 2012, Prof. Mike Oquaye printed thousands of copies of his achievements and led house-to-house campaigns for her. In 2016, Amb. Mike Oquaye Jnr personally ensured that she had the needed support at the constituency collation centre. Yet, in 2024, she refused to be part of the campaign process,” he noted.
The group lamented that her disengagement from constituency activities, her absence from parliamentary duties, and her failure to support party efforts ahead of the elections were deliberate acts of sabotage.
“Adwoa did not engage herself in any campaign activity of the party in the constituency before and after she lost the parliamentary primaries in 2024. She was absent throughout the campaign period. Several attempts to involve her proved futile. She refused to return calls from the P.C. or reconciliation attempts by the Chief of Staff Auntie Frema Opare, Adelaide Ahwireng (Maa Fio), Gabby Okyere Darko, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Hon. Irene Naa Torshie among others. She rather spent her time in Ashanti Region and other constituencies in Greater Accra like Trobu and Adenta,” he explained.
The constituency executives further accused the former MP of undermining the party’s candidate in the 2024 elections.
According to them, she distributed campaign resources meant for the NPP to the NDC parliamentary candidate and was later seen jubilating with the opposition after the elections.
“When Irene Naa Toshie Addo gave her fabrics and cash to aide the NPP campaign in the constituency, she gave them to the NDC Parliamentary Candidate in Dome Kwabenya. While we were in heated dispute with the NDC in the election results, our MP was seen jubilating with the NDC candidate.
“The latter had gone to that church to celebrate her victory at some churches in the constituency. Yet this same person will not pick up calls from our P.C. let alone invite him to her church. This clearly showed that Hon. Safo was deliberately working against the NPP preferred candidate, Amb. Michael Oquaye Jnr. No wonder the now Member of Parliament was invited to the Kristo Asafo Church sponsored programme and captured exchanging pleasantries with Hon. Sarfo at a time when our party was in a dilemma over the collated results of Dome Kwabenya Constituency,” he indicated.
He dismissed claims by some youth groups that the NPP’s collapse in Dome Kwabenya was due to poor leadership at the constituency level.
Defending the Constituency Executive Committee (CEC), they argued that it managed affairs effectively in Adwoa Safo’s absence.
They reaffirmed their commitment to the party, calling for unity and an honest assessment of the factors that led to the NPP’s loss in Dome Kwabenya.
“We remain committed to working with all to advance the course of the party. We are hopeful that NPP will bounce back again and DKC will surely recapture its temporal lost glory. This we hope to do so through an all hands-on deck approach,” he added.
