Kwabena Minta Akandoh being supported to official cut tape for the health centre to be opened
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has commissioned the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) 10th Anniversary Model Health Centre at Abutia Kpota in the Ho West Municipality.
The facility, which was fully funded by KOFIH, is expected to enhance healthcare delivery and improve access to essential health services in the region.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on February 24, 2025, the minister emphasised the government’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through strategic investments and collaborations.
He commended the longstanding partnership between Ghana and South Korea, highlighting KOFIH’s contributions to various health initiatives, including maternal and child health, biomedical engineering, and emergency medical services.
“The Republic of South Korea has remained a strong ally to Ghana, providing funding, technical assistance, and grant support to strengthen our health system.
“This model health centre stands as a testament to our shared commitment to ensuring quality healthcare for all,” Akandoh stated.
He assured the public that the government would continue to monitor and support the facility to ensure its sustainability.
He also urged healthcare workers and the local community to take ownership of the centre and maintain its standards.
The minister emphasized that all projects he commissions must be fully operational.
Therefore, this project has been thoroughly inspected to ensure it functions effectively upon commissioning.
The event also saw the commissioning of a newly established Biomedical Engineering Unit (BEU) at the Volta Regional Health Directorate.
This unit, another initiative supported by KOFIH, aims to ensure the proper maintenance and management of medical equipment, ultimately improving the efficiency of healthcare services in the region.
Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriya, Acting Director General of the Ghana Health Service, expressed gratitude to KOFIH for its decade-long support in strengthening healthcare infrastructure.
He noted that the new health centre would play a vital role in expanding primary healthcare services in the region.
“This facility is not just a building; it is a beacon of hope for the people of Abutia Kpota and surrounding communities.
“It will provide essential healthcare services, reduce maternal and child mortality, and ensure timely medical interventions,” Prof. Akoriya remarked.
The facility includes two staff bungalows to accommodate healthcare personnel.
