Prophet Kofi Oduro Sends Message to John Mahama Over Independence Day Venue Change

Share

Prophet Kofi Oduro, founder and leader of Alabaster International Ministry, has shared a message with President John Dramani Mahama regarding his recent decision to hold the upcoming Independence Day anniversary at the Jubilee House instead of Independence Square.

Addressing his congregation, Prophet Oduro commended Mahama for the innovative move. He pointed out that just a year ago, the government spent over GH¢50 million on Independence Day celebrations. According to him, many Ghanaians appreciate Mahama’s efforts to curb unnecessary government spending.

He also praised the president for eliminating first-class travel privileges for his appointees, criticising the previous administration for allowing officials to travel in luxury, which he said contributed to wasteful spending.

President Mahama’s decision to hold Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House instead of Independence Square is part of a broader effort to cut costs amid the country’s economic challenges. The government has also suspended the rotational hosting of the event in different regional capitals, as past celebrations—such as the one in Ho—reportedly cost up to GH¢15 million. By centralising the event at the Jubilee House, the administration aims to practice fiscal responsibility while still honouring the nation’s heritage.

The Jubilee House, inaugurated in November 2008, serves as the official residence and office of the President of Ghana and is the centre of the country’s executive functions. Traditionally, national events, including Independence Day parades, have been held at Independence Square, also known as Black Star Square.
