Chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nablah, has expressed disappointment in Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and the Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Madam Louisa Hanna Bissiw, for looking on unconcerned as President John Dramani Mahama fails to deliver on his promise to allocate 30% of his cabinet members to women.

Madam Nablah stated that this was not only shameful and an insult, but also a constitutional violation that needed to be addressed.

President John Dramani Mahama named his cabinet of 19 ministers on Thursday, February 20, 2025, with only two seats reserved for women, despite his campaign promises to allocate 30% to women.

Madam Nablah criticised the Vice President for failing to ensure that the President kept his promise.

She claimed that the vice president promised to hold the door open for other women to serve in government, but the cabinet list has revealed her weakness.

”The Affirmative Bill establishes specific targets for gender representation. It proposes that 30% of all appointments and opportunities be reserved for women, 35% by 2028, and 50% by 2030. These quotas apply to public office, governance, decision-making, and leadership positions in a variety of sectors. However, President Mahama’s cabinet appointments have violated the law, and it is unfortunate that the Vice President, who promised to hold the door open for more women to enter, has made no comment on this.”

Speaking with Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she stated, “President Mahama is clearly violating the constitution with impunity. Parliament has passed legislation to address gender inequalities, but the president has failed to follow through on his promises. Were you deceiving us (Ghanaians) into voting for you? Ghanaians voted for you, and you can do whatever you want. You appointed only two women to the cabinet, accounting for only ten percent.

This is a direct insult to Ghanaian women.

“I’m extremely sad about this. Where are the women of the NDC? This is an insult to them, and it is shameful for them to witness it. Hanna Bissiw, you are a women’s organiser, but you refused to talk. You are a disgrace to the NDC and the women. The Vice President is a disgrace to the women of the National Democratic Congress. They must be bold enough to confront the president and tell him he has made a mistake. I will blame the NDC women for this incident.”
