President John Dramani Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concerns about the state of the economy and how it was managed by the previous government.
Addressing officials of Organised Labor in an engagement on Thursday, February 20, 2025, President Mahama lamented how poorly the economy was managed by his predecessor, describing the country as a “crime scene” due to the state of affairs.
According to him, he knew the economy was not in good condition and that the country had been plunged into crisis. However, he has been astounded by the extent of the rot since assuming office.
He accused the former government of being reckless in its handling of the economy, which has plunged the state into an even worse situation.
“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I’m discovering myself, I mean, it’s been a criminal handling of our economy and Ghana is a crime scene. How a government can be so reckless, I cannot understand,” he said.
President Mahama additionally mentioned how the citizenry has developed a mistrust of the political class in the country, stemming from their self-centered behavior of not making sacrifices while other institutions are doing so to help cushion the economy.
He highlighted instances where various institutions are required to cut costs and make sacrifices, while the political class, in contrast, continues to engage in wasteful spending, to the detriment of the citizens.
The president assured, however, that under his administration, the days of wasteful spending and excessive expenditure will be over, as he is committed to implementing measures that will help the economy revive and bounce back.
“A certain distrust of the political class has arisen because it’s like when everybody else is tightening their belts, the political class is loosening its belts. But I want to assure you that we’re all going to tighten our belts and there will be no wasteful expenditure,” he added.
