Eric Edem Agbana is the Member of Parliament of Ketu North
The Member of Parliament of Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has criticised members of the New Patriotic Party for what he perceives as their hypocritical stance in addressing and discussing issues surounding state persecution.
In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s George Ayisi, the lawmaker questioned the moral authority of NPP party members to speak on raids by security agencies and the prosecution of officials, arguing that their government did worse in the past.
“The NPP does not have the moral authority to speak about persecution. I am a parliamentarian and an advocate for good governance,” he said.
Reiterating his advocacy for good governance, Agbana stressed his commitment to demanding accountability from state officials and appointees, stating that he would not hesitate to criticise his own government if they engaged in any act of illegality.
“On any day, I would want to see many more Ghanaians speak to issues of accountability and call for the right things to be done. I will be one of the first MPs within the NDC who will call out any act of illegality in my government if I feel strongly that indeed they are not acting right,” he continued.
The former Deputy National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) recounted instances under the previous government where the rule of law was flouted and disregarded, including the unlawful detention of arrested protestors in police custody, despite court orders demanding their release.
“This pretense and the hypocrisy of the NPP in the matters of the rule of law because, for 8 years, we saw the blatant disregard for the rule of law in this country.
“Under President Akufo-Addo and the erstwhile NPP administration, we saw people being held in police custody even when the court had given an order for them to be freed. We saw an unprecedented number of raids by National Security on people’s properties and homes,” he added.
Edem Agbana further maintained his stance that the NPP has no moral right to speak on matters regarding persecution because of how poorly they handled things during their tenure.
