Al Waleed Comprehensive Basic School from Accra have been crowned champions of the 2024 NFL Flag National Championship tournament in Ghana, across the U12 division.

The one-day NFL Flag football tournament was held in Accra with 12 U12 teams of boys and girls from 24 schools across Accra and Kumasi.

Fast-paced and accessible for all, flag football is one of the fastest growing sports globally with women and girls driving some of the largest growth in participation. NFL Flag is the official flag football program of the NFL — working to bring the non-contact version of American football to young athletes worldwide.

“It has been an incredible day of competition with teams full of talented athletes competing,” said Afia Law, NFL Flag International. “We’re thrilled to be here, offering boys and girls the opportunity to celebrate the sport of flag football. Congratulations to Al Waleed Comprehensive Basic School!”

Al Waleed Comprehensive Basic School met Nima 1 Basic School in the U12 Championship Game winning 12-0, crowning them Ghana’s 2024 National NFL Flag Football champions.

The flag football activity continued on the ground with Minnesota Vikings linebacker Brian Asamoah officially launching his flag league in Ghana – showcasing two U14 teams in a competitive game. A U17 high school girls flag football game also took place onsite in Accra, illustrating the commitment to flag football’s growth in Africa.

The Philadelphia Eagles, who have marketing rights in Ghana as part of the Global Markets Program, supported the NFL Flag Championship tournament and also hosted an All-Star Flag Championship on October 20, 2024 with six adult flag football teams competing.

Flag football will officially be included in the LA 2028 Olympic Games program, led by efforts of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) and supported by the NFL.

NFL Flag programming has been active in Ghana and will continue throughout the continent, with further tournaments across Africa in the coming months.
