The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, has suggested that Ghana consider establishing a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), modeled after initiatives by U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk.

DOGE is an initiative of the second Trump administration, informally led by Elon Musk. Despite its name, it is not a Cabinet-level department but rather a temporary contracted organization under the United States DOGE Service (formerly the United States Digital Service). Its primary mission is to implement Trump’s agenda of federal spending cuts and deregulation.

According to Dr. Kwakye, a similar department in Ghana would focus on eliminating wasteful government spending, ensuring fiscal discipline, and streamlining public sector operations.

“Maybe Ghana should consider setting up a Trump/Elon Musk-style Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to cut the huge waste in government spending,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on February 15, 2025.

His post suggests that establishing such a department could also enhance accountability and optimize the use of public resources.

Dr. Kwakye’s remarks come amid growing concerns over government expenditure and budgetary inefficiencies.

Over the years, many analysts have called for stringent measures to reduce waste and enhance transparency in public financial management.

Dr. Kwakye has frequently emphasized that adopting a strategic, efficiency-driven approach would not only save the country billions in revenue but also boost economic stability and public confidence in governance.

His latest proposal adds to ongoing debates on the need for institutional reforms to curb excess spending and promote efficient resource allocation in Ghana’s public sector.
