The World Health Organization (WHO) donated a consignment of essential health commodities to the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Accra on February 18, 2025.

This initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen the country’s response to meningitis.

Dr Frank Lule, WHO Representative to Ghana, expressed his excitement at presenting the commodities in the fight against meningitis and reiterated that WHO remains fully available and ready to provide additional support whenever needed.

“WHO is ever ready to support you in the fight against diseases,” he said.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the ministry, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health assured the public that the recent outbreak is under control with the WHO dispatching technical assistance in supporting the ministry’s efforts.

He emphasized that there are sufficient antibiotics available to treat affected individuals.

The minister added that a response team will be deployed to the northern part of the country to alleviate the burden.

He urged the public to report symptoms to the nearest facility, stressing that timely medical attention is crucial in managing the outbreak effectively.

“Most often, when you identify symptoms, kindly seek medical attention early. The government has rolled out several measures to combat the disease, so be assured of that,” he said.

The donated commodities include Ceftriaxone, a medication for treating meningitis.

The commodities will be transported to Wa to support the response efforts in the affected areas.
