The President of the Mamprugu Youth Association, Iddrisu Shaibu, has questioned the rationale behind the government’s decision to impose a curfew on Walewale, arguing that violent incidents have been occurring in broad daylight without effective intervention.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, monitored by GhanaWeb on Monday, February 17, 2025, he expressed concern over the timing and effectiveness of the curfew, particularly in light of recent security incidents in the area.
“I woke up this morning to hear about a curfew imposed on Walewale and its environs. Before the curfew on Saturday, there was an incident in a community along the Tamale-Walewale Road, where a bus was burnt down. Following that, the military entered a nearby community, brutalized the people, and as a result, one person died. The next morning, we woke up to a notice of a curfew in Walewale,” he stated.
Shaibu further questioned the logic behind the curfew, emphasizing that attacks have been taking place during the daytime.
“What is the effect of the curfew when the incidents on the Bolga-Walewale road occurred in broad daylight? Similarly, on the Bolga-Bawku road, even under military escort, people come out and shoot at both the military and vehicle occupants, leading to fatalities, yet no curfew or military action is enforced there,” he lamented.
A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed on Walewale and its surrounding areas in the North East Region following recent disturbances that have claimed several lives and left many injured.
