Dome-Kwabenya NPP Members Blame Mike Oquaye Jnr for Parliamentary Seat Loss

Share

Some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency have expressed their dissatisfaction with Mike Oquaye Jnr, blaming him for the party’s loss of the parliamentary seat in the 2024 elections.

According to them, while the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaigned vigorously for their candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, the NPP’s campaign effort appeared lackluster. They claim that rather than engaging in an aggressive grassroots campaign, the party’s leadership in the constituency merely walked along the roadside, giving the impression of campaigning without any real impact.

The disgruntled party members argue that this weak campaign strategy contributed significantly to the NPP’s failure to retain the seat, which had long been a stronghold for the party. They insist that Mike Oquaye Jnr, who led the party’s campaign in the constituency, should take responsibility for the loss.

Frustrated by the outcome, these NPP members are calling for Oquaye Jnr’s departure from the constituency’s political scene. “We no longer want him here, let alone contesting for the seat again,” one member stated emphatically.

The loss of the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat is seen as a major setback for the NPP, especially considering its historical dominance in the area. The internal frustrations suggest growing tensions within the party as it assesses the reasons behind its electoral defeat and looks ahead to rebuilding support in the constituency.

As the NPP strategizes for the future, it remains to be seen whether the party leadership will heed the calls for new leadership in Dome-Kwabenya or attempt to reconcile differences within its ranks.
