Dr. Opoku Prempeh after his meeting with Eminent Persons Group of the Christian Council of Ghana
The Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has firmly assured that the NPP remains committed to ensuring peace before, during, and after the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Prempeh made this declaration on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, when a delegation from the Eminent Persons Group of the Christian Council of Ghana paid a courtesy call on the NPP at the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Office in Accra.
In his remarks, Dr. Prempeh emphasised the NPP’s strong track record of deepening democracy in Ghana, citing how the party has historically handled electoral processes.
“In 2008, the NPP lost the elections by the narrowest of margins—just 23,000 votes—but we accepted the outcome, and power was peacefully transferred from President Kufuor to the late President Mills,” he said.
Dr. Prempeh added that the NPP remains unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding the unity and stability of Ghana during the 2024 elections.
“Our track record speaks for itself. The NPP is a party that values peace, and we will continue to uphold this principle in the upcoming elections, ensuring the nation remains united,” he stressed.
The NPP’s Head of Electoral Affairs, Mr. Peter Mac Manu, also addressed the delegation, condemning the baseless attacks by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the Electoral Commission.
He noted that many of these allegations have proven to be frivolous and driven by political mischief.
Mac Manu urged the Eminent Persons Group to denounce all inflammatory rhetoric that could threaten the peace of the country in the lead-up to the elections.
Adding to the discussion, NPP General Secretary Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong reiterated the party’s unwavering commitment to a peaceful electoral process. He condemned the NDC’s confrontational stance on the elections and encouraged all stakeholders to prioritize the nation’s peace above political expediency.
The Christian Council delegation, led by Rev. Enoch Thompson, expressed satisfaction with the NPP’s assurance of peace and thanked the party for its willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.
Rev. Thompson reaffirmed the Christian Council’s commitment to holding all political parties accountable to a peace pact ahead of the 2024 elections, ensuring that the process is conducted in a spirit of unity and respect for democratic principles.
