A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has strongly condemned the recent incident in which a group of armed military personnel reportedly raided the home of Lord Commey, the former Director of Operations at the Presidency, to seize his personal belongings.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on February 5, 2025, Nana Akomea expressed his concerns about the rising vigilantism in certain parts of the country, where individuals have been reportedly accosting former government appointees to seize their properties.
According to him, no individual is leaving or fleeing the country, and therefore, they should not be treated in an inappropriate manner.
He specifically stated that such incidents do not bode well for the country’s democracy.
“It doesn’t speak well nor befit our democracy. No one is running away from the country. We are all here so if you think someone is unlawfully possessing a state property, just write to them to return it. This vigilantism is not the way to go,” he bemoaned.
He also expressed particular concern about the government’s silence in addressing these issues.
“A few days ago, I heard of the Lord Commey incident, where some individuals stormed his house to seize his vehicles in Dansoman. What is going on? I heard the individuals went there aggressively to seize his properties with a tow truck… but they returned the vehicles.
“The government must address this issue of vigilantism because it is worrying. Do they want someone to get hurt before they address the matter? I don’t understand it,” he further bemoaned.
Nana Akomea, a former Member of Parliament of Okaikwei South from 1997 to 2009, stated that allowing individuals to unlawfully seize properties is unacceptable.
He suggested that an official communication should have been sent to Lord Commey, requesting the submission of documents related to his properties.
“If you think the vehicles of Lord Commey did not belong to him, you could have told him to submit documents of it. The government is just watching idly and individuals are acting lawlessly and unlawfully seizing properties,” he added.
His comments follow reports of a group of armed military personnel raiding the home of the former Director of Operations at the Presidency, Lord Commey, in Dansoman, a suburb of the nation’s capital, Accra.
According to a report by GHOne TV on February 3, 2025, the armed military personnel seized vehicles and other items from Lord Commey’s residence during the raid.
The report indicated that the vehicles and items were, however, later returned to the residence, hours after being seized.
“Armed military personnel raided the former Director of Operations at the Presidency, Lord Commey’s home in Dansoman, seizing vehicles and items. These were returned within 24 hours following swift intervention, but the motives behind the raid and its legality remain unclear,” the media house posted on X on Monday, February 3, 2025.
The post also contained a video from the scene when the event transpired.
The video showed a scene from the raid, where a man was heard saying, “We have towed all the two cars, we just got out.”
