Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has asserted that the nomination of Dr. Johnson Asiama as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana remains valid.

He expressed confidence in the government’s nomination of Dr. Asiama, emphasising that his qualifications make him a strong candidate to lead the apex bank.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on February 5, 2025, the Minister-designate for Government Communications highlighted Dr. Johnson Asiama’s expertise and experience in economics and finance.

“He is a well-known economic and finance expert with significant acumen. He has previously served as the second deputy governor of the BoG, making him uniquely qualified to hold the position of governor.

“That is what President Mahama considered in appointing him to the position, and we believe that he will do an excellent job,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.

He further pointed out that the government remains unperturbed by the Minority’s opposition to the appointment, adding that stakeholders within the financial sector and economy understand the pertinent issues.

“The government is not concerned. All stakeholders within the financial sector and the economy are well-grounded and fully aware of the realities regarding the economy and national finances.

“They also understand that political actors often engage in grandstanding and theatrics to further their political interests.

“I do not believe that any serious investor or key player in the Ghanaian economy will make decisions based on the Minority’s concerns, which are neither well-founded nor motivated by genuine economic considerations,” Kwakye Ofosu explained.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament, led by its leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is calling for a review of the nomination and has hinted at plans to petition the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding Dr. Johnson Asiama’s appointment as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

They have raised concerns about the legality of his appointment and questioned his integrity.

Dr. Asiama’s nomination by President John Dramani Mahama is currently pending consultation and approval by the Council of State, following Dr. Ernest Addison’s decision to proceed on terminal leave ahead of his retirement in March 2025.
