Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare
A Kumasi High Court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by 40 Chief Inspectors against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, over claims of unfair denial of promotions within the Ghana Police Service, according to a report by 3news.com.
The officers, who have served between 25 and 30 years, contended that they were unjustly excluded from a special amnesty program that promoted degree-holding officers who earned their qualifications before 2020.
The report noted that the officers argued that junior officers benefitted from the initiative while they were denied entry into the Police Academy, a prerequisite for promotion to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
In their suit, the officers sought promotions, direct admission into the Police Academy, and compensation for income lost due to stalled career progression.
In 2023, the Chief Inspectors sued the IGP, the Police Management Board (POMAB) and the Attorney General over what they describe as the unjustifiable refusal of the service to promote them.
In a writ filed at the High Court in Kumasi, the police officers claimed they were excluded from a series of promotions prompted by a special amnesty granted to police officers who passed out from police training schools by 2008 and had obtained university degrees as of 2020, the report added.
