George Afriyie, the former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has issued a scathing critique of the current leadership under Kurt Okraku, claiming that it is time for the football community to accept that Okraku has failed in his administration.
In a recent interview with Peace FM, Afriyie was asked about his potential role in the GFA’s proposed reforms. He took the opportunity to express his concerns about the current state of Ghanaian football, pinpointing Okraku’s leadership as a key problem.
Afriyie emphasized that for the GFA to successfully revive Ghanaian football, Okraku and his administration would need the backing of other important stakeholders. “I was interviewed by Michael Oduro on Metro TV, and he asked me what I could do to help considering the current state of our football. I told him we must all admit that Kurt has failed, and we all need to support him. That’s the truth, and it’s the same thing you are asking me this morning,” Afriyie explained.
Kurt Okraku became the GFA president in October 2019 and was re-elected for a second term in October 2023. However, his leadership has been marred by several disappointments, such as the Black Stars’ early exits from the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and their recent failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.
Afriyie’s remarks add to the growing criticism of Okraku’s tenure, signaling that significant changes may be necessary if Ghanaian football is to recover and thrive in the future.
