Antony posts cryptic message as Erik ten Hag succession plan emerges

Share

Manchester United are finally back to winning ways after a 2-1 victory at home to Brentford eased the pressure on Erik ten Hag.

United looked like they were headed for another dismal result when Ethan Pinnock headed the Bees into the lead on the stroke of half time before Rasmus Hojlund got the Red Devils level with a smart dink.

Alejandro Garnacho then put United ahead with a brilliant finish to ensure a first win in six games and erase the negative feeling around Old Trafford.

As the team now prepare for a crucial trip to Fenerbahce in the Europa League, Mirror Football rounds up the latest and biggest news around Manchester United.

United target Amorim

Despite Ten Hag easing the pressure on his position with a crucial win over Brentford, talk still remains over a potential replacement in the near future and Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has now emerged as a possible successor to the Dutchman, despite speculation he could replace Pep Guardiola at their rivals Manchester City.

Guardiola’s contract at the Etihad expires next summer and the Spaniard could bid to end his nine-year stay at the club, with Amorim reportedly eyed up instead, though reports from Sky in Germany claim United have made enquires over the highly-rated coach and is on their shortlist.

Amorim, who was linked to the Liverpool job after Jurgen Klopp departed in the summer, is set to finish the season with Lisbon but there is a reported release clause that will come into play in 2025, which could influence any decision United or City want to make.

Hojlund rejects Van Nistelrooy comparisons

Most players would be flattered to be likened to a legendary striker like Ruud van Nistelrooy but Rasmus Hojlund was keen to distance himself from comparisons to the Dutchman after his goal against Brentford on Saturday.

Some claimed Hojlund’s clever finish – dinking the ball over Mark Flekken – was similar to Van Nistelrooy when he was a United player, but the Dane said he wanted to instead see United’s assistant manager as a role model.

“A Van Nistelrooy finish? I don’t want to be compared to him. If you want to talk about him, he is a role model for us. I can develop a lot alongside him.”

“Working very close with Ruud van Nistelrooy is a big step for me,” Hojlund stated. “He is doing a great job. I’m trying to bring everything I can every time I step on the pitch, especially here at Old Trafford.”

Antony posts cryptic message

Manchester United star Antony continues to be left out of Ten Hag’s plans after being left out of the matchday squad to face Brentford – and he’s made his feelings clear in a social media post.

The Brazilian has played on 27 minutes of action as a substitute for United this season and his future now looks bleak after being snubbed for Saturday’s game, with the ex-Ajax man posting a defiant message in response.

He wrote: “As long as God is my ground, there is nobody who can knock me down,” followed by a praying emoji.

Antony’s only start this season came in a 7-0 win over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, in which he scored the second goal of the game.
