Luis Suarez makes Inter Miami transfer decision as club legend eyes 2025 return

Uruguayan football icon Luis Suarez has said he’s eager to lace up for Inter Miami once again in 2025.

Chatting with journalists on Friday, Suarez revealed his excitement about potentially donning the Herons’ colours next season. “It’s up to the club,” he said. “For me, I would be delighted.”

The striker delved deeper into his intentions, commenting, “My lawyer is talking to the club, but I am with a calm mind. I am going to finish the season in the best possible way, which is what I wanted, and to show the club that one comes with desire, feels good physically, and with the hope to continue being part of the history of this club.”

Inter Miami’s gaffer, Gerardo Martino, spoke on the likelihood of Suarez’s continued stint if the situation presents itself, stating confidently, “Of course, all the high-class players like Luis that we can have and put together much better. So surely, if the possibility is given that it will happen.”

It was in December that Suarez penned a one-year deal with Inter Miami, seeking a reunion with his old pal Lionel Messi. Reflecting on his move, he said: “I’m very happy and excited to take on this new challenge with Inter Miami.

“I can’t wait to get started, and I’m ready to work to make the dream of winning more titles with this great Club a reality. I’m optimistic about what we can achieve together with our shared ambition.”

At first, it seemed the 37-year-old ace might only have one season’s gas left in his MLS tank before hanging up his boots. However, as he approaches the tail end of an absolutely smashing 2024 campaign, it’s crystal clear Suarez has no plans for a quiet exit just yet.

Charging ahead into the last match of the regular season, Suarez has netted an impressive tally of 18 goals and served up seven assists over 26 pulsating matches, catapulting Inter Miami towards clinching both the Supporters’ Shield and an MLS playoff spot. He currently sits in fourth in the chase for the Golden Boot, trailing behind top notchers like D.C. United’s Christian Benteke (23), Columbus Crew’s Cucho Hernandez (19), and LAFC’s Denis Bouanga (19).

Not to be overlooked, Suarez also bagged a nomination for the prestigious 2024 MLS MVP award, rubbing shoulders with none other than Messi. But what’s truly awe-inspiring is Suarez’s peak fitness levels; this year alone, he’s clocked in 33 appearances for the Herons across all competitions and tacked on another five caps for Uruguay.

Despite ticking years and a previous bout with chronic knee pain that sparked speculations about his future, Suarez’s performance this season has been nothing short of a revelation. Before sealing the deal with Inter Miami, he toyed with the notion of retirement, though.

“I can feel pain. My body is speaking for me,” he admitted.

“I want to enjoy and then decide for myself after a long career. I need to rest, enjoy my family … then destiny will know where I’ll be in the future.”
