Economist, Kwame Pianim has emphasised that the fight against illegal mining activities in the country should not be politicised.

Speaking on the AM Show on Joy News on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, he called on the President to set up an independent commission of scientists, geologists, and health professionals to collaborate on sustainable ways to tackle the menace, which he described as an existential threat to humanity.

“The President should set up an independent commission of scientists, geologists, and health professionals to find ways to end this galamsey issue. We need to pause and reflect on the issue of galamsey and freeze all licenses for a year, he stated.

Kwame Pianim pointed out the devastating effects of galamsey on vital human organs such as the heart and the liver.

“Are the food crops able to take in the heavy metals absorbed from galamsey? When I eat it. I am eating heavy metals. The galamsey issue should not be politicised. It is a national issue. Your kidneys and livers are being destroyed.

“Illegal small-scale mining should be stopped. If the heavy metals get into the soil, they pollute the soil. We are supposed to conserve our environment and protect our lands”, he stated.
