Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, is under fire as some constituents demand an immediate refund of their District Assemblies Common Fund, which he allegedly used as a donation to support Adum Market fire victims.
In a video shared by GHOne on X on April 3, 2025, some residents expressed their displeasure over the matter and demanded the immediate return of GH¢100,000.00, an amount allegedly drawn from the constituency’s Common Fund to support the traders.
They lamented that the constituency was in need of infrastructure and other developmental interventions, which could have been addressed with the funds the former MP donated to the traders.
A constituent, who gave her name as Maame Buor, criticised the former MP, stating that he erred in using the Common Fund, which was meant for the development of the constituency, for donations.
“The money is meant for the constituency. Why would you use it to court praise from the public? You left the seat to the current MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. So, ideally, you should have left the funds for him to utilize in the constituency. He must return the money so it can be used for developmental projects. Donations for personal praise should come from his own funds,” she said.
Another constituent, Kwame Amo, added that Opoku Prempeh should have handed over the funds to the incumbent MP for developmental projects in the area instead of donating them to the Adum fire victims.
“I have no idea how the money ended up with him because he’s no longer our MP. I’m curious as to how the Common Fund was accessed by him. If he truly wanted to support the victims, it should have come from his personal funds.
“If the money was sitting in the account unused during his tenure, the right thing to do was to account for it and hand it over to the incumbent MP for developmental purposes. I disagree with him using the funds on his own volition as a donation to the Adum fire victims,” he said.
The former Manhyia South MP and running mate to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 election flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, on April 2, 2025, donated GH¢50,000 and 500 bags of cement to support traders affected by the devastating fire at the Adum PZ Market in Kumasi.
His gesture follows a devastating fire that razed shops at the Adum Central Market on March 21, 2025.
The inferno destroyed properties and goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
