A police constable drowned on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, morning in the River Offin at Assin Asaman during an anti-galamsey operation.
The officer has been identified as Constable Kwabena Dogbewas. His lifeless body was recovered after a four-hour search.
The incident occurred during a swoop operation led by the Central North Regional Police Command as part of the fight against illegal mining in the area.
Details emerging indicate that the suspected illegal miners fled across the river when the police stormed the illegal mining site.
The constable, in an attempt to seize and destroy their equipment, including changfang machines and water pumping devices, slipped and drowned.
The other officers who were with him, according to the information, could not swim and had to go to the town to search for swimmers to help them rescue the officer. After several hours of searching, the lifeless body of the constable was retrieved.
An investigation is currently underway, while the body of the deceased officer has been deposited at the mortuary.
