The former president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is being blamed for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) huge defeat in the 2024 Election.

According to a poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, about 68 percent of Ghanaians attributed NPP’s defeat to Akufo-Addo’s bad governance, which they say affected the economy, livelihoods, among others.

Though the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s name was not left out in the blame game, many said the performance of Akufo-Addo hugely reflected on the December poll of 2024.

The poll showed how the public felt about the party’s defeat, with a sizable majority of voters blaming important government officials as well.

According to the results, 37% of respondents blamed the loss on Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, while 40% blamed former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, for the loss.

Furthermore, 32% held other government appointees accountable, while 33% blamed Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Additionally, 25% of voters assigned some degree of responsibility to Members of Parliament, demonstrating that they were not exempt.

According to the research, a large number of voters believed that the Akufo-Addo-led government’s performance was a key element in the NPP’s electoral defeat.

The belief that the former president’s leadership was a major factor in the party’s defeat may have been influenced by factors like public discontent, governance issues, and economic difficulties.

Remarkably, only 9% of respondents held the former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, accountable.

Agyapong participated in the NPP’s primaries but failed to win the nod from his party to guide them to victory.

The poll also showed that about 48.1 percent of voters tipped former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as their preferred candidate to lead the NPP in 2028.

Also, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong, polled 25.1 percent among the cross-section prominent persons named as potential candidates to lead the party, becoming second most preferred candidate.

According to the Executive Director and Lead Researcher of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, speaking to Bernard Koku Avle, the poll was conducted between the last three months.

He stated that Dr Bawumia will have to prepare for a difficult tussle because the election will be more fierce than the last election, if he wins to lead the NPP in 2028.

The poll also showed that most Ghanaians did not vote in the last elections over low interest in the Ghanaian democracy, government performance and the same voting patterns over the years.
