Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League quarter-final match against Esperance was marred by scenes of hooliganism after rival supporters clashed in a brawl on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

The ugly scuffle erupted at the end of the game as fans from both sides breached security measures and engaged in physical altercations in the stands.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb, the violence unfolded in the blue stand of Loftus Versfeld Stadium, where fans were seen throwing objects at each other while others engaged in fistfights. Despite the chaotic scenes, no deaths were recorded.

However, three Esperance fans sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

In an official statement, Esperance SC confirmed that the injured fans are in stable condition and reassured supporters that all travelling fans had safely returned to Johannesburg.

“The Tunisian Sports Al-Taraji assures all Al-Taraji fans, especially the families of those who travelled to South Africa, that our supporters are fine and have returned to Johannesburg safe and sound.

The club’s management ensured the necessary transport was secured to leave the stadium and take them to the train station,” the club stated.

“The Tunisian Sports Al-Taraji informs all its fans that the three individuals taken to the hospital are in stable condition and are receiving treatment.”

Additionally, the Tunisian club announced that it will submit an official complaint to CAF, providing evidence of the altercation.

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a 1-0 victory over Esperance, with Peter Shalulile scoring the decisive goal for the home side in the first-leg encounter. EE/BB
