The Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has issued a stern warning to state-owned institutions that owe the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to settle their debts or face electricity supply disruptions.

This, he said, would address the financial challenges facing the electricity company and promote accountability in the use of state resources.

The warning comes amid a growing scandal involving the disappearance of ECG containers at the Tema Port, which has sparked widespread concerns of corruption.

According to Jinapor, while speaking to GHOne TV, several state institutions, including Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), have failed to pay their electricity bills.

“A lot of the MMDAs are not paying. You, the ordinary Ghanaian, are paying, so MMDAs ought to pay as well. If they continue like this, we will cut their supply,” he stressed.

Jinapor also called for a review of Ghana Water’s procurement processes to cut costs.

“Ghana Water, in particular, has not paid a single cedi. Meanwhile, it sells water and collects money, prompting me to write to the president,” he indicated.

He emphasised that institutions that continue to default on their payments will face electricity supply disruptions.

The warning also extends to other institutions, including Parliament and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), which will be required to provide a payment plan to avoid electricity supply cuts.
