5 Times Anas Uncovered Corruption Among Ghana’s Leaders

Share

Anas Aremeyaw Anas, the renowned Ghanaian investigative journalist, has exposed several high-profile corruption scandals that shook Ghana. Here are five major occasions:

1. Ghana Judiciary Scandal (2015)

Anas released a documentary titled “Ghana in the Eyes of God”, which exposed over 30 judges and court officials taking bribes to influence judicial decisions. Some judges were seen accepting money, goats, and yams in exchange for favorable rulings. This led to the dismissal of several judges and court staff.

2. Ghana Football Scandal (2018)

In his “Number 12” exposé, Anas revealed widespread corruption in Ghanaian football. The documentary implicated top officials, including the then-president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, who was caught on camera negotiating bribes from undercover agents pretending to be investors. This led to the dissolution of the GFA and Nyantakyi’s ban from football.

3. Customs and Ports Corruption (2019)

Anas released a documentary exposing corruption at Ghana’s ports, where officials took bribes to clear goods illegally or reduce import duties. The documentary led to the suspension and investigation of several Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Customs officials.

4. Galamsey Fraud (2020)

The “Galamsey Fraud” documentary exposed how some officials in charge of fighting illegal mining (galamsey) were themselves taking bribes to allow illegal mining activities to continue. This included the then-Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Charles Bissue, who was filmed accepting bribes to assist mining companies in bypassing regulations.

5. COVID-19 Funds Corruption (2023)

Anas investigated the misuse of COVID-19 relief funds in Ghana. His findings revealed how some officials inflated procurement costs and engaged in corrupt dealings to profit from pandemic relief efforts. This led to calls for accountability and further government scrutiny into pandemic spending.

Each of these exposés had significant consequences, including dismissals, resignations, bans, and increased public awareness about corruption in Ghana.
